Metroplan: Few in Central Arkansas Walk, Bike to Work

1 min read

Metroplan released its 2014 Demographic Review and Outlook, which found central Arkansas has one of the lower shares of workers biking and walking to work.

The spring edition, which focused on health and the environment, found 1.3 percent of commuters bike or walk to work in central Arkansas. It was ranked 343rd out of 366 U.S. metro areas. Comparatively, the northwest Arkansas metro area had a 2.8 percent share of commuters biking or walking to work.

Both were below the national average between 2008 and 2012, which was 3.4 percent

Take Our Poll: Should central Arkansas leaders invest more in bike-friendly infrastructure?

“Like most U.S. metro areas, central Arkansas has plenty of streets and highways slicing through its urban fabric, making walking, biking, or using a wheelchair difficult and dangerous in many areas,” the review states.

The review also found the following:

•The Little Rock-North Little Rock metropolitan statistic area was also well above the U.S. average in obesity, physical inactivity and miles driven per capita.

•Saline and Faulkner counties led the region with annual population growth with estimates of 2 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively.

•Hot Springs Village and Sherwood were the only cities in the area to see growth in single-family housing permits, while Conway was the only to see growth on the multi-family side.

Metroplan publishes reviews twice a year. The spring edition is the Demographic Review and Outlook, and the fall edition is the Economic Review and Outlook. To read the entire spring publication, click here (PDF).
