KATV Sweeps Little Rock Nielsen Ratings Again

3 min read

It was Christmas in July again for Sinclair Broadcast Group’s ABC affiliate KATV-TV, Channel 7, as the station swept Nielsen household ratings in all but one broadcast for the third consecutive July ratings period.

The ratings period marks KATV’s sixth clean sweep in the past three years. The station increased its year-over-year ratings in nearly every category.

KATV also performed well among women viewers. KATV’s 5 a.m. “Daybreak” tripled the female 25-54 demo numbers of its competitors NBC affiliate KARK, Channel 4, owned by Nexstar Broadcasting Group, and CBS affiliate KTHV, Channel 11, owned by Gannett. “Alyson Courtney, Chris Kane and Meteorologist Melinda Mayo have special chemistry, and they have quite a following,” News Director Nick Genty said in a news release.

During KATV’s 10 p.m. broadcast, the station maintained nearly a 2-point lead in most demos, and saw the female demo grow from 4.7 ratings points to 6 year over year.

A Nielsen household ratings point represents 1 percent of about 555,500 households with a TV in the Little Rock-Pine Bluff market area, and the share is the percentage of those households that are watching TV at that time.

July tends to be the least important ratings period, KATV Research Director Leigh Graham said. She explained people watch less TV when the weather is nice. Graham said numbers also tend to be lower because a lot of network programs are reruns.

“News at Six” continues to be KATV’s highest rated show, with a household rating of 11.6 and a viewership share of 25.7 percent. However, the program saw a 13 percent ratings drop and 10 percent drop in viewership from last July.

Some of those viewers may be tuning in to KARK, which was the only 6 p.m. newscast to see a slight ratings increase — ratings increased from 5 to 5.2 and shares from 10.8 percent to 11.8 percent.

KATV’s 6 p.m. rating of 11.6 was more than KARK’s and KTHV’s combined.

KLRT-TV, Channel 16, remains the lowest-rated newscast in the 5 p.m. hour, with a rating of 1.9 and a share of 4.7 percent. But those numbers are heading in the right direction — up from 1.4 and 3.2 last July.

At 10 p.m., KATV won the household ratings by nearly 3 points with a rating of 8.7 and a viewership share of 22.3 percent, followed by KTHV with a rating of 6 and a share of 15.5 percent and KARK with a rating of 4.8 and a share of 12.3 percent.

KTHV, Channel 11’s 10 p.m. broadcast saw the most significant ratings drop of any local station or time slot, going from a rating of 7.1 to 6 — a 15 percent drop from last July.
