J.B. Hunt’s Kirk Thompson Appointed to Rand Logistics Board of Directors

Kirk Thompson, chairman of the board at J.B. Hunt Transport Services of Lowell, has been appointed to the board of directors at Rand Logistics Inc. of New York City. 

Thompson is the first of two new independent directors being sought by Rand, and brings the current number of directors to six.

“We are very pleased to welcome Kirk to the board,” Michael Lundin, non-executive chairman of Rand’s board, said in a news release. “His strong experience and insights into the transportation and logistics industry as well as his executive leadership and board experience in transforming J.B. Hunt into one of the largest publicly held transportation logistics companies in North America, will be a valuable addition to our organization.”

Thompson has been at J.B. Hunt for 40 years. He was made chief financial officer in 1979, president and chief operating officer in 1986, and CEO in 1987. Thompson has served on J.B. Hunt’s board since 1985, and became chairman in 2011. 

Last month, J.B. Hunt (Nasdaq: JBHT) posted a third-quarter net income of $102.4 million, or 87 cents per share, up 14 percent from $89.5 million, or 75 cents per share, a year ago. It also reported an operating revenue of $1.6 billion, up 12 percent from 2013. 

Rand Logistics (Nasdaq: RLOG) provides bulk freight shipping services throughout the Great Lakes region. It operates four conventional bulk carriers and 12 self-unloading bulk carriers, including four tug and barge units.
