2 min read

The Arkansas State University System said Wednesdsay that it had hired Shane Broadway, the director of the state Department of Higher Education, as vice president of governmental relations.

System President Chuck Welch announced the hiring in a news release.

Broadway’s starting date with the university hasn’t been determined. ASU said Broadway is expected to continue in his current role through the Jan. 30 meeting of the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Broadway succeeds Robert Evans, who is retiring after 16 years at ASU. Broadway’s ASU salary will be $185,000. Evans’ salary is $189,159.

“Shane brings to us an ideal blend of experience as a former legislator who is very knowledgeable about higher education and the processes of state government,” Welch said in a news release. “He is also an alumnus and former student body president at Arkansas State, so he has a great love for his alma mater and shares our vision for growth and service to students. I have been particularly impressed by his ability to work in a nonpartisan manner at the state Capitol.”

Broadway graduated from ASU in 1994. He was a member of the state House from 1997-2002, and elected Speaker in 2001. At the time, he was the youngest Speaker in the state’s history. He served in the state Senate from 2003-10.

He joined ADHE as deputy director in January 2011. He was appointed interim director a month later by Gov. Mike Beebe and was named director in October 2013. He is also a member of the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet.

Gov.-elect Asa Hutchinson had asked Broadway to stay on has director of higher education. On Wednesday, Welch said he and Broadway notified Hutchinson of the Broadway’s decision.

“We appreciate Gov.-elect Hutchinson’s understanding of Shane’s desire to serve his alma mater in this capacity,” Welch said.

“As an alumnus, it’s an honor to return to the place that gave me my opportunity for a higher education,” Broadway said in the news release. “This opportunity will allow me to give back and make a difference in the lives of others like me who will pass through the doors of the ASU System campuses.”

The ASU System has 20,800 students at campuses in Jonesboro, Beebe, Heber Springs, Searcy, Newport, Marked Tree and Mountain Home. It also has instructional sites in Paragould and at the Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville.
