Tyson Foods to Upgrade Georgia Plant, Add 500 Workers

1 min read

Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale said this morning that it plans to invest $100 million in its Vienna, Georgia poultry plant, adding about 500 jobs there.

The meat processor says improvements to the plant, which already employs 700, are part of its “ongoing plan to maximize efficiencies and meet growing demand for its products.”

The Vienna plant produces chicken for foodservice customers, including restaurants, but will convert to supply fresh tray pack chicken for regional retail customers, the company said. Work begins in mid-January to upgrade parts of the plant and add about 100,000 SF. The job should be complete by the middle of the year.

Improvements include new equipment, production lines and technology for food safety, quality and workplace safety.

The company said it’s receiving qualified job tax credits for new capital investment from the Georgia Department of Economic Development. Tyson said the state is helping with new and existing employee training programs.

“The existing infrastructure, location and the availability of workers make the Vienna plant ideal for this expansion project,” Noel White, president of poultry for Tyson Foods, said in a news release. “This project will improve the plant’s product mix and make it even more cost competitive.”

Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN) purchased the plant in 1995.
