Brett Powell Named Director of the State Department of Higher Education

1 min read

The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board on Friday named Brett Powell the new director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

Powell comes from Ouachita Baptist University, where he has been vice president for administrative services since 2006. He replaces Shane Broadway, who is taking a governmental relations post with the Arkansas State University System.

Before that, Powell was associate vice chancellor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, director of financial services at the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

Upon confirmation by the governor, Powell will assume his new position at ADHE on Feb. 9.

“I’m delighted with the selection of Dr. Powell to be the new director of Higher Education,” Gov. Asa Hutchinson said in a news release. “I’m pleased with the choice, and I’m pleased with the way the board conducted the selection process. I have no doubt that Dr. Powell will do a great job leading a department so crucial to the future of Arkansas.”

Powell’s appointment follows a national search led by AHECB Chairman Bob Crafton.
