Proposal Would Reinstate Arkansas’ Voter ID Requirement

1 min read

LITTLE ROCK – An Arkansas lawmaker wants to ask voters next year to reinstate a voter ID requirement that the state Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional.

Republican Sen. Bryan King of Green Forest on Wednesday filed a proposed constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would reinstate a law requiring voters to show photo identification before being allowed to cast a ballot. The proposal would require the Legislature to enact the voter ID law.

King was the sponsor of a voter ID law that the Legislature approved two years ago. The state Supreme Court struck down the law in October, saying it violated Arkansas’ constitution.

Wednesday is the deadline for lawmakers to file proposed amendments. The Legislature can refer up to three proposals to put on the November 2016 ballot.
