Craighead County Sees Sales Tax Collections Rise

1 min read

Craighead County reported a 10.75 percent increase on its 1 percent sales tax receipts during the first three months of 2015 compared with the same period last year.

The county collected $4.74 million for the first quarter of 2015, which reflects the amount collected at Craighead County’s cash registers from November through January, said Craighead County Treasurer Terry McNatt.

The city of Jonesboro, which also has its own 1 percent sales tax, also saw its tax receipts jump to $4.34 million during the first three months of the year, an increase of 10.4 percent compared with the same period a year ago, according to Jonesboro’s chief financial officer, Benjamin Barylske.

Barkley said he thinks the drop in fuel prices left people with more money to spend on other items. And, he said, Jonesboro “is really growing up here right now.” He said several businesses have opened in Jonesboro since 2014, including NEA Baptist Health System of Jonesboro’s medical campus, which features a 550,000-SF hospital.

McNatt agreed that the decline in the price of gas has helped retail sales.

The county also encourages residents to spend money in town, he said.
