2 min read

Lawrence Whitman has been named the new dean of the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology (EIT) at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the university announced Monday.

Whitman is a former associate dean of the College of Engineering at Wichita State University in Kansas. He will join UALR on July 1.

“Dr. Whitman is the ideal choice for this position because of his experience in working together with faculty to establish partnerships between the college and industry,” said UALR Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Zulma Toro. “This collaborative approach is what industry has told us they need to move Arkansas’s economy forward.”

At Wichita State, Whitman helped increase undergraduate student enrollment by more than 36 percent and undergraduate graduation rates by 20 percent, according to a UALR news release.

Whitman received $2 million in research funding from the National Science Foundation, industry and foundations.

Whitman received a Ph.D. in industrial engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and received both his M.S. and B.S. degrees from Oklahoma State University. Prior to joining Wichita State, he was a researcher at the Automation and Robotics Research Institute and an engineer at Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics.

“This is an opportune time for the city of Little Rock and UALR, and I am excited to lead the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology to new levels,” Whitman said. “My passion is to ensure that the college impacts not only the city, but the region and the nation.”
