Bass Pro Shops is laying off employees at its 75 retail outlets and corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, according to published reports.
According to an article by the Denver Post, the retailer is laying off an average of six employees at each of its retail stores, which makes for an estimated 450 employees across the U.S. and five Canadian outlets.
The Post cited a statement from Paul Shore, Bass Pro’s vice president of human resources, who said the layoffs are an effort to be more efficient and had nothing to do with the company’s financial situation.
The company is also halting plans to build a megastore in Loveland, Colorado, but will open eight stores this year. Bass Pro also confirmed fewer than 60 employees were affected by layoffs at corporate headquarters, according to KY3 News.
