Census Says Poverty Rate in US Stays Consistent

1 min read

The official poverty rate in the United States in 2014 was 14.8 percent, and 46.7 million people were in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The rate and number weren’t statistically different from the 2013 estimates.

“The 2014 poverty rate was 2.3 percentage points higher than in 2007, the year before the most recent recession,” the bureau said.

The findings were contained in the agency’s recently released report “Income and Poverty in the United States: 2014.”
