Children’s Shelter Receives $47K from Tyson

1 min read

Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale donated $47,610 for the Fort Smith Children’s Emergency Shelter “Happy Plate” food service program, the shelter announced Wednesday.

Serving more than 260 abused and neglected children each year, the donation from Tyson Foods will allow the CES to provide more than 37,440 meals.

“Among other things, our children come to us hungry,” Ashley Ahlert, the advancement coordinator for the Children’s Emergency Shelter, said in a news release. “Having Tyson’s support for the ‘Happy Plate’ food service program will allow our staff to provide nutritional meals & snacks which the children will enjoy eating.”

The CES formerly participated in the National School Lunch Program, but the funding from Tyson will preclude NSLP funding.

In a formal check presentation at the CES on Tuesday, Tyson Foods’ representative, Pat Bourke, along with Fort Smith and Van Buren plant representatives, said the “program is right in line with the core values of Tyson Foods.”

The Fort Smith Children’s Emergency Shelter serves area children ages 6-17 who have been removed from their home by the Department of Human Services due to abuse. Their mission includes providing a shelter and care, in a safe and structured home-like environment to abused and neglected children.
