Northwest Arkansas Makes Lonely Planet’s Best in US List

1 min read

Northwest Arkansas was named No. 7 on the Best in the U.S. list by Lonely Planet travel media company on Tuesday.

The list is described as the “most unexpectedly exciting places to see in the United States in 2016,” with Philadelphia taking the No. 1 spot.

The Lonely Planet article emphasized northwest Arkansas’ “small-town chic” and “great outdoors” and said the region gives “the Rockies a run for their money.”

According to Lonely Planet PR manager Natalie Nicolson, this is the sixth year of Best in the U.S.

“Every year, we ask our whole community of U.S.-based editors and writers, who are constantly on the road researching the U.S., to nominate the best places to visit in the year ahead,” Nicolson said. “That includes cities, regions and states getting buzz at the moment, overlooked places that are poised to shine or perennial favorites that have a fresh, new angle for 2016. Then, after much discussion and debate, the list is whittled down to 10 and ranked.”

This is the first time an Arkansas location has made the list.

“With wide open spaces, mountains and crystal blue lakes and rivers, this region also has cultural flare, with towns that are distinctly unique from one another, like Fayetteville – an artsy university city with a vibrant literary scene – and Eureka Springs, which has access to some of the best hiking in the Ozarks,” said the article about the region.
