State Supreme Court Keeps Eye on Attorney Sanctions

1 min read

The 16 attorneys facing sanctions for abusing the federal court system in a controversial class-action case aren’t the only ones interested in what U.S. District Court Judge P.K. Holmes III will do on June 24.

Stark Ligon, executive director of the Supreme Court Office of Professional Conduct, also will be watching.

Ligon said he’s kept an eye on the activity surrounding the class-action case of Mark and Katherine Adams v. United Services Automobile Association.

Holmes issued a scathing order on April 14 against 16 attorneys in the case for abusing the federal court system. Holmes said he plans to issue the sanctions after a June 10 hearing.

“I’m waiting right now to see what orders, if any, are issued after the hearing,” Ligon told Whispers. “I’m basically an observer.”

Ligon said his office has jurisdiction to discipline any Arkansas licensed attorney or an attorney who has significant connections to the state or if the conduct occurs in Arkansas.

Ligon said that under the Arkansas Supreme Court’s confidentiality rules for attorney discipline procedures, he couldn’t confirm or deny if a complaint had been lodged or a file had been opened on any attorney.
