Lawmakers Approve, Send to Governor a Bill to Allow Truck Platooning

1 min read

A bill to allow Arkansas trucking companies to use truck platooning passed the Arkansas House and Senate.

House Bill 1754, sponsored by Rep. Charlie Collins, R-Fayetteville, would exempt trucks from a state law that require vehicles to maintain at least 200 feet of separation while on state roadways. If signed into law by Gov. Asa Hutchinson, two or more driver-assistive trucks equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology would be allowed to draft on the road.

The bill requires trucks to have an actively engaged driver in the cab, and companies wishing to use truck platooning must present detailed proposals to the Arkansas Highway Commission for approval. The Arkansas Trucking Association in Little Rock supported the bill.

The bill passed the House in a 85-1 vote and the Senate in a 35-0. Rep. Richard Womack, R-Arkadelphia, was the only legislator who voted against the bill.
