Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Still Not for SaleLock Icon

1 min read

No, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is not for sale, unless you’re talking about the single copies that go for a dollar at the corner store, its publisher says.

Talk about a sale of the Little Rock daily, or maybe other Wehco Media Inc. properties or perhaps the whole chain, have been circulating.

But Publisher Walter Hussman Jr., Wehco’s board chairman, shot them down last week.

“Absolutely not,” Hussman told Arkansas Business. “Not sure how these rumors get started. Might be because we had our annual shareholders meeting today [May 15], but it is the same time every year.”

It was the second time in 10 months Hussman has dismissed sellout talk. The last time, in late July, rumor had it that Warren Buffett would be the buyer.

The Oracle of Omaha had praised Hussman’s business acumen in refusing to give away his newspaper content free on the internet, and Hussman attended Berkshire-Hathaway’s annual meeting after lunching with Buffett at the billionaire’s request.

But that was all there was to it. “He has never once asked about acquiring our paper or newspapers, and we are not interested in selling them,” Hussman said.
