Fort Smith Medical School Announces Expansion Plans

1 min read

The Arkansas Colleges of Health Education in Fort Smith said an anonymous $15 million donation will allow it to expand its osteopathic medical college campus and surrounding area.

Kyle Parker, president and CEO of the ACHE, announced the proposed projects at a news conference Tuesday morning at the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine, which is scheduled to open July 31.

“Our vision has always been ambitious, and we accomplished the first phase of that vision with the building of a $40 million, 102,000-SF, state-of-the-art medical school facility and residential complex for our students,” Parker said. “Through the generosity of an anonymous gift of $15 million, we are able to announce new facilities that help us expand our offerings and focus on service to the underserved in our state and region.”

The projects Parker announced are: a $15 million, 60,000-SF health science building; a $6 million expansion of student housing complex called “The Residents” for an additional 218 students; a 7,000-SF research center; and a mixed-use development plan for 228 acres adjacent to the medical campus.

Parker had previously spoken about the mixed-use plans with Arkansas Business in 2016.

The development would include housing as well as commercial, restaurants and retail. Construction of the new facilities is scheduled to begin in the fall with the hopes of being completed in time for the 2020-21 school year.
