Solar power now employs the largest share of workers in the electric power generation sector in the United States, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy.

In 2016, solar technologies employed almost 374,000 workers or 43 percent of the workforce of the electric power generation sector. That’s followed by fossil fuels — coal, oil and natural gas — which employed 187,117 people or 22 percent of the workers in electric power generation.

The dominance of solar employment “is largely due to the construction related to the significant buildout of new solar generation capacity,” the report said.
