Fort Smith business consultant Jay Richardson announced on Tuesday his bid for the Democratic nomination for the District 78 seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives.

The district comprises the northern portion of Fort Smith in Sebastian County. The incumbent is Rep. George McGill, who has announced his intention to run for mayor of Fort Smith.

Richardson, 46, works for Centuria Ventures in Fort Smith, a private equity group managing economic development and local investments.

“My hope is to focus and improve poverty and homelessness. This is a statewide issue and a huge challenge and opportunity for District 78. I also want to continue the positive work that is taking place in elementary education,” the candidate said in a news release.

Richardson has been involved with the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club, Future School of Fort Smith and the Fort Smith Round Table. He has also volunteered in the city's public schools.

The candidate is from Fort Smith and graduated from Northside High School. He received an associate's degree from Westark Community College, which is now the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, and attended Southern Arkansas University. Richardson received his bachelor's degree from John Brown University.

No other candidates have announced their intention to run for the seat.
