Brian Thompson (NSA)

Local fans of American Public Media’s “Marketplace” program that airs on many NPR stations might have heard Little Rock accountant Brian Thompson’s voice last week.

Thompson was interviewed by reporter Nancy Marshall-Genzer for a piece that aired last Monday about anticipation among accountants of the tax bill that was released on Thursday by the Republican leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives.

How did an accountant from Arkansas happen to be picked for a national report?

Well, it turns out that Thompson is actually a national figure in accounting. On Sept. 1, he became president of the National Society of Accountants, an organization that represents the specific interests of small accounting firms. Like, for instance, Bailey & Thompson Tax & Accounting PA in southwest Little Rock.

Thompson said he was at the NSA headquarters in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, a couple of weeks earlier when the request for an interview from “Marketplace” came in.
