Arkansas Baptist Trustees Fire President Joseph Jones

1 min read

The Arkansas Baptist College Board of Trustees announced Monday that Joseph Jones, president of the college, has been terminated for cause, effective immediately.

Jones had served in the role for 15 months and succeeded Fitz Hill, who was president for 10 years and resigned to pursue other interests. Hill led the college to restored accreditation, financial stability and near-record student enrollment, according to a news release.

The board said it fired Jones over his lack of transparency with its members on issues that could place the board and the institution at significant risk of financial and legal jeopardy. The trustees also said that lack of transparency prevented them from having the information necessary to make timely decisions that would have been necessary to avoid potential risks.

Kenneth Harris, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said in a news release, “The board has lost confidence in Dr. Jones’ leadership and judgment in order to guide the school to its greatest potential.”

Speaking to the Arkansas Times, Jones says he resigned from the post on Friday, but was told on Sunday that he was fired.

“I have hired legal representation,” Jones said. “I will be re-engaging them on that level.”

He declined further comment.
