UAMS Eliminating 125 Positions Through Attrition

1 min read

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences said Friday it would eliminate an estimated 125 positions through attrition. The announcement comes less than two months after UAMS said it would cut its workforce by 600 positions, which included 258 positions that were occupied.

“We have between 80 and 100 people leave every month, so that won’t be difficult to do,” UAMS spokeswoman Leslie Taylor told Arkansas Business.

The new reductions are expected to save $8.7 million in personnel costs.

In January, UAMS projected the 600 positions eliminated will lower expenses by between $26 million and $30 million for the fiscal year that ends June 30. For the fiscal year that starts July 1, UAMS is now expected to lower its expenses by $63.1 million as a result of eliminated positions.

UAMS is the state’s largest public employer with more than 10,000 employees working in nearly every county in Arkansas.

Arkansas Business reported in December that the university was looking for ways to cut costs amid a projected a deficit of $72.3 million for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30. At the beginning of the fiscal year, UAMS had projected a deficit of $39.8 million.

On Friday, Taylor said that UAMS now is projected to come in below the $39 million deficit by June 30.

Lowering the projected deficit “came in through a combination of things like underspending in nonclinical areas to returns on investment and just other measures that we’ve taken including reviewing all positions,” Taylor said.

For the fiscal year that starts July 1, “we’re feeling good about having a zero deficit budget,” Taylor said.
