The transportation and warehousing sector contributed 4 percent of Arkansas’ total gross domestic product in 2016, according to the federal government.

The sector includes industries providing the transport of passengers and cargo, like the trucking industry, the warehousing and storage of goods, scenic and sightseeing transportation and support activities related to transportation.

The percentage that the sector contributes to a state’s GDP “depends on the state’s geography, population density, mix of industries, and location of transportation hubs,” the U.S. Department of Transportation notes. Nebraska, for example, with a major national rail hub in Omaha, has the second-highest percentage of GDP from the sector in the country at 7.8 percent in 2016.
