Continued rain and rising water levels have forced the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to close deer hunting season on flood prone regions C, D, and E as well as on Dave Donaldson Black River and Shirey Bay Rainey Brake WMAs in eastern Arkansas. Flood prone region B and two other WMAs (Henry Gray Hurricane Lake and Rex Hancock Black Swamp) will remain closed as well.

No permit hunts are scheduled for the closed WMAs until Nov. 7 (Nov. 14 for Rex Hancock Black Swamp). Those hunts will be canceled if the flood water does not recede in time. If they are cancelled, permit winners will receive refunds for their permit fees.

"The last thing we want to do is close hunting opportunities, but we must make these closures for the safety of the hunters and to protect the herd from possible over harvest during an already stressful flood event," said David Goad, chief of the AGFC Wildlife Management Division.

Flood prone zone closures and openings are determined by specific river gauge readings at 3 p.m. each afternoon. The following is a list of gauge readings required to reopen the closed zones and WMAs.

  • Flood prone zone B - Reopens when the White River gauge at Augusta falls below 30 feet and the White River gauge at Georgetown falls to 19 feet.
  • Flood prone zone C - Reopens when the Cache River gauge at Patterson falls to 9.5 feet.
  • Flood prone zone D - Reopens when the White River gauge at Clarendon falls to 27 feet.
  • Flood prone zone E - Reopens when the White River gauge at St. Charles falls to 23.5 feet.
  • Dave Donaldson Black River WMA - Reopens when the Black River gauge at Corning falls below 9.5 feet.
  • Shirey Bay Rainey Brake WMA - Reopens when the Black River gauge at Black Rock falls below 19 feet.
  • Henry Gray Hurricane Lake WMA - Reopens when the White River gauge at Georgetown falls below 14 feet.
  • Rex Hancock Black Swamp WMA - Reopens when the Cache River gauge at Patterson falls below 8.5 feet.
