Raiders Price For McFadden Could Be Going Up

We haven't checked Darren McFadden's blog in a while, but we would like to suggest a post for the next time the former Arkansas tailback updates things:

Dear Matt Ryan,

Thanks for helping me make more money. I owe you.

Your pal,
Darren McFadden

Ryan signed a six-year contract Tuesday with the Atlanta Falcons worth $72 million. This is important to McFadden because he was selected by the Oakland Raiders one spot behind Ryan, the former Boston College quarterback, in April's 2008 NFL Draft.

McFadden's representatives have been watching negotiations between the Falcons and Ryan closely. The fact Ryan's $34.75 million guarantee is nearly $5 million more than that given to No. 1 overall pick Jake Long could mean McFadden's team can command more money from the Raiders.

Earlier today we pointed to the San Francisco Chronicle's explanation of why Ryan's negotiations would be important. Now we find out just how much that holds true.

Once Ryan agrees to a contract, the ceiling will more or less be set for everyone drafted thereafter -- including McFadden, who the Raiders took fourth overall.

This wouldn't necessarily have been the case if that No. 3 selection played at a less dynamic position -- say, defensive tackle -- that usually pays less than running back.

But, Ryan plays quarterback, the most expensive position of them all. McFadden may be considered the most exciting offensive player in the draft, but his agents will be hard-pressed to get him more money than a quarterback who was taken earlier.

McFadden was expected to sign a deal in the neighborhood of a $50 million, six-year contract with $20 million guaranteed. Those numbers could go up significantly now.
