Keeping an eye out for the college basketball preview magazines is a rite of autumn, checking out the racks for tomes published by Street & Smith, ESPN or as in the case above, The Sporting News. Though most national magazines now feature athletes of area schools on its regional editions, it's still a treat to see which SEC player will dominate the cover.
And as you can see, good ol' Courtney Fortson represents the Razorbacks on the 2010-11 Sporting News preview. It should be a good year for No. 4. Nevermind that he left the team in April to pursue a spot in the NBA draft. Nevermind that no team took him. Nevermind that he recently signed on with Bnei Hasharon, a pro team in central Israel. And nevermind that we're hearing things that lead us to believe Jesus will probably make it back to the Mid-East before Fortson does.
The fact is, The Sporting News put Courtney Fortson on the Region 8 cover of its preview six months after he left collegiate basketball altogether. That cover got designed, dummied up, passed around a room full of editors and sent out to the printing plant, all without one person going, "Hey, is that guy still with the team?"
Good stuff. We hear this might be the year Calipari takes the Tigers all the way to the Final Four.
