Hankins: Arkansas State Should Hire Hugh Freeze

Hugh Freeze should be Arkansas State's next head football coach.

Here’s my case:

• He proved himself with the overhaul on offense this year that produced record-breaking performances in its first year.

• He has SEC caliber recruiting experience with strong ties throughout the South.

• He has strong ties to Memphis, which used to be fertile ground for ASU recruiting.

• It would give ASU a fighting chance of reaching the Memphis media market again.

• He has an engaging personality that an audience loves. We haven’t had that in years. Today at the Little Rock Touchdown Club, everyone was absolutely focused on him and left really motivated on an absolutely dreary day.

• He’s young and hungry with a philosophy on offense that recruits love.

• His “Blind Side” story involving Michael Oher is compelling and useful in generating attention and exposure.

• He would be a very effective fund-raiser for the program, which desperately needs more cash.

• Arkansas State's track record with former “name” coaches is awful. Al Kincaid, Ray Perkins, even Joe Hollis.

I also want to note that I genuinely appreciate many things that Steve Roberts did for ASU during his tenure and wish things could have worked out. However, it was time for change at the top.
