Coaching changes tend to bring questions about the plans of players signed by the outgoing staff. Arkansas fans are certainly interested in the five players expected on campus for 2011-12.

Former Razorbacks coach John Pelphrey said Monday he had told members of the consensus Top 10 class to stick with their commitment. Pelphrey delivered the comments during a press conference to discuss his recent firing after four seasons.

“I spent basically my whole existence here recruiting those guys. I have spoken to them. I’ve told them for whatever time it was that the University of Arkansas is the best place for them. I still believe that.”

Pelphrey, 69-59 in four seasons, pointed to the incoming class as a sign of improvement in the program. Mickelson, Madden and Ross are all from Arkansas and Pelphrey said the fact the trio signed with the Razorbacks was another tribute to the strides he’d made.

Athletic director Jeff Long did not entirely agree with that assessment. Long said:

“…It is clear that we have not made the progress over the last four years that is necessary to return Razorback Basketball to a place of national relevance.”

Can this class do that? Pelphrey certainly thought so.
