Arkansas junior forward Marshawn Powell underwent surgery on his left foot Wednesday.

A team spokesman said the surgery was supposed to “clean it up and make sure everything is OK” on the foot Powell injured last month in an offseason pickup game. Powell had foot problems last season too, but the UA said the injuries are unrelated.

Powell should be cleared to take part in offseason basketball work this summer. He is expected to “be ready for the fall,” the team spokesman said.

A preseason all-SEC selection in 2010-11, Powell averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. He seemed to struggle with his 2010 foot injury through most of last season. His highlight came against Kentucky when he had 22 points and 10 rebounds in an upset of an eventual Final Four team.

Offseasons have not been kind to Powell, a 6-foot-8, junior-to-be. He broke a hand prior to arriving at Arkansas in 2009 and injured his foot last summer

Powell noted near the end of last season that he rushed back from the injury. He said it impacted him mentally and physically last season.
