Last July, Travis Wood astonished many by pitching a near-perfect game in only his third start. Was the Bryant native going to make a run at Cliff Lee for Saline County's Best Pitcher?
Wood hasn't come close to pitching any more perfect games lately. This season, he's 5-5 with a not-so-airy 5.11 ERA. Monday, Reds manager Dusty Baker moved Wood up in the rotation to cover for Johnny Cueto, out with a neck injury. Going up against the New York Yankees in interleague play, Wood allowed four earned runs in the first inning alone and gave up eight hits with one walk.
He also struck out six, didn't give up any runs for a six inning stretch and retired his final 11 batters.
But the Yankees won 5-3 and Wood was pinned with the loss. That's why he's in the Outhouse today, but hey. Nobody's perfect.
