Arkansas junior tailback Knile Davis will miss the 2011 season with an ankle injury.

Davis was injured on a three-yard run, seven plays into a Thursday scrimmage. He disappeared in a pile after taking a handoff up the middle and could be heard screaming after running the ball. Team medical personnel helped Davis off the field and after being examined on the sidelines for several minutes, he was helped into a cart and driven off the field.

Coach Bobby Petrino issued a statement on the condition of Davis, who led the SEC in rushing last season:

“I am extremely disappointed for Knile. He is a captain who was incredibly focused on the upcoming year. His leadership throughout the offseason was significant in the development of this team. Our athletic trainers and medical staff are the best in the country, and Knile’s mental toughness will be an asset to him during the recovery process. I am fully confident in the mindset of our running back group and their ability to perform.”

Davis, an all-SEC pick, was a catalyst for Arkansas' run to the Sugar Bowl. He finished with 889 yards and 12 touchdowns over the final six weeks of the regular season and the Razorbacks ran their offense through him down the stretch. Petrino had high praise for Davis throughout camp and on Saturday mentioned the junior's late-season surge — 148.1 yards and two touchdowns per game the final six games.
