Arkansas finds itself in the BCS national title conversation entering its final regular season game of the year. No. 1 LSU hosts the No. 3 Razorbacks on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
A potential spot in the championship game is on the line. No. 2 Alabama is also in the conversation.
Here’s what national outlets are saying about Friday’s game and the role the Razorbacks play in determining the representatives in what could be a all-SEC championship game.
ESPN’s SEC Blog:
But don’t forget about Arkansas. The Hogs could shake everything up with a win against LSU. A win for the Hogs could ensure them a trip to the national championship game, and it would likely send Alabama to the SEC title game. Like Alabama, the Hogs would benefit from not having to play an extra game in Atlanta.
ESPN BCS guru Brad Edwards with Mike & Mike discussing the possibility of Arkansas being left out even with a victory against LSU:
“I really have a difficult time seeing LSU falling to No. 3 … in the BCS. … The more I look at it, the three-way tie will go in LSU’s favor.”
Barrett Sallee, College Football News:
Talk about a conundrum. For Arkansas to advance to the SEC Championship Game via the three-way tiebreaker, it must beat LSU bad enough to jump Alabama in the standings, but not embarrass the Tigers to a point where they fall below Alabama. Do you see that happening? I don’t. That’d be like scoring touchdowns but kneeling on extra points.
CBSSPorts.com:
3. Arkansas: Remember when the Razorbacks were going to take a sizable step back after the departure of Ryan Mallett? Instead the Hogs have climbed to BCS heights even Mallett couldn't touch, with only one win standing between Bobby Petrino's team and the sort of total standings chaos that could give them a crack at their first BCS title. Of course, that win is going to be the single hardest win to come by in college football this season: against LSU in Baton Rouge. And even with a win, the Hogs' chances would depend (and depend heavily) on how voters ranked the three SEC West teams locked in their unbreakable tie atop the division. But whatever happens vs. the Tigers, this 2011 season has proven beyond a doubt that Petrino's program isn't going anywhere as a national power. – JH
