Tyler Wilson evaluated his options. And he figured the NFL can wait.
Wilson, rated by some as high as the No. 3 quarterback prospect for the 2012 draft, announced his decision to return to Arkansas. He said it was a tough decision, but the opportunity to build on 11 wins and continue development was key in him rejoining the Razorbacks.
“I have decided to stay at Arkansas for the 2012 season because I am extremely excited for what this team has the opportunity to accomplish and to finish earning my degree. After the feedback I received, the decision was difficult to make. Ultimately, the chance to complete my academics and play one more season as a Razorback were compelling reasons for me to remain in Fayetteville. This past year was great for us with 11 wins and a top-five finish and we want to build on that. The group of players we have returning has high expectations and wants to work hard to compete for championships. Although my goal is to play in the NFL, I believe I can benefit greatly from another year of working with Coach (Bobby) Petrino and Coach Paul Petrino.”
Within seconds of Wilson announcing he’d return, national college football analysts began discussing what that could mean for the Razorbacks. Yahoo! Sports’ Pat Forde Tweeted: “Hogs should be Top 10 going into next season, possibly Top Five.”
Wilson, who threw for 3,638 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions, joins running back Knile Davis as key pieces returning. Davis announced his decision earlier in the week.
Arkansas finished No. 5 in the final Associated Press poll. Eventual national champ Alabama and runner-up LSU were the only teams to beat Arkansas this year.
Both Alabama and LSU are expected to be strong contenders again in 2012. Arkansas plays both at home, however.
