FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas sophomore pitcher Barrett Astin was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week the league office announced Monday afternoon.

It is the second SEC weekly honor of Astin’s career. Last season, Astin was named the league’s freshman of the week after earning a save and a victory in a doubleheader against Ole Miss to close the regular season.

A sophomore right-hander from Forrest City, Astin started the series finale against Villanova on Sunday and earned the victory by throwing five hitless innings with seven strikeouts. Astin, who set a career high with five innings pitched, retired the first seven he faced and closed the outing by sitting down seven of the last eight.

For his career, Astin is 6-2 with three saves and a 2.51 ERA in 28 appearances, including four starts. In 64 2/3 career innings pitched, Astin has struck out 64 batters and held the opposition to a .241 average.

Astin and the rest of the No. 4 Arkansas baseball team return to the field on Tuesday and Wednesday as they host Northwestern State in a two-game series at Baum Stadium. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
