J.B. Hunt CEO Roberts Earns $5.3 Million in 2011

John N. Roberts III, 47, who became president and chief executive officer of J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell on Jan. 1, received $5,348,736 in total compensation during 2011, according to the company's proxy filed Thursday.

In 2011, Roberts received $549,019 in salary, shares valued at $4,374,300, non-equity incentive plan compensation of $412,500 and other compensation of $12,917.

Roberts was not a "named executive officer" during 2010, so his compensation for that year was not detailed in the proxy.

J.B. Hunt reported $4.5 billion in revenue during 2011, an increase of 19 percent compared with the previous year. It reported net earnings of $257 million in 2011 compared with $199.6 million in 2010.

Kirk Thompson was president and CEO during 2010, and he earned $4.9 million that year: $695,000 in salary; $2.1 million worth of stock; a $243,246 bonus; and $1.83 million by exercising shares of J.B. Hunt stock during 2010, according to the proxy covering 2010.

A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Roberts joined the company in 1989 as a management trainee. Before being elected by the J.B. Hunt board as president and CEO, Roberts had served as executive vice president and president of dedicated contract services.

Other major officers and their total compensation in 2011:

  • David G. Mee, EVP of finance and administration and CFO, $1,259,448.
  • Kirk Thompson, chairman of the board, $3,553,413.
  • Paul R. Bergant, EVP, chief marketing officers and president of intermodal, $679,108. (Bergant retired from the company Jan. 1. Terrence D. Matthews took over the position of executive vice president and president of intermodal.)
  • Craig Harper, EVP of operations and COO, $1,280,223.

The company will hold its annual meeting at 10 a.m. April 26 at the cooperate offices of J.B. Hunt at 614 J.B. Hunt Corporate Drive in Lowell, the proxy said.
