Even as Arkansas basketball struggled on the court, the Razorbacks seemed to find themselves in elite company.

Forbes.com recognized the basketball program as one of its 20 most profitable in college basketball in 2010. Arkansas was ranked No. 14 on the 2010 list. Though the results on the court didn’t reflect a Top 20 ranking on the floor, that list still put the Razorbacks in the conversation with programs North Carolina, Kentucky and Duke.

Not this year.

Arkansas was not included on the 2012 list of most valuable basketball programs. Declining attendance and poor on-court performance in three previous seasons impacted where the Razorbacks stood financially.

Louisville is regarded as the most valuable college basketball program. SEC schools making the list were Kentucky (No. 5) and Tennessee (No. 18).

Here’s how Forbes compiled its rankings:

Unlike our professional team valuations, which estimate how much a team would sell for in an arms-length transaction, our ranking of the most valuable college basketball teams uses a weighted scoring system to measure the value generated by each team for three distinct areas, in order of weight: university (basketball scholarships and academic contributions), athletic department (net profit used to support other athletic programs) and conference (payouts from success in the NCAA tournament). The average value of the top-20 teams is $19.1 million, up from $18 million when we last published our list in 2010. Average basketball profit has also increased, from $10.7 million to $11.6 million over the last two years.

Mike Anderson’s first season with the Razorbacks did see an increase in attendance. That surely will have a positive impact the bottom line and get Arkansas back into the conversation as one of college basketball’s most valuable properties.

Arkansas was No. 8 on Forbes' 2011 list of most valuable football programs.
