Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino has no clause in his contract preventing him from riding motorcycles. UA Athletic Director Jeff Long said earlier this week he had no plans to add such language to the contract following an accident in which Petrino suffered numerous injuries.

There is, however, language that covers how Petrino operates in the public eye and interpretation of the clause is left entirely to the discretion of the University of Arkansas. Now the UA must determine if Petrino’s accident, which involved a recent female hire to the football staff, violates any of his contract.

Petrino told media outlets he was alone at the time of the accident. The UA released a statement credited to the Petrino family that said the wreck “involved no other individuals."

Here is the contract language which stipulates Petrino can be fired or face other disciplinary action for “engaging in conduct, as solely determined by the University, which is clearly contrary to the character and responsibilities of a person occupying the position of Head Football Coach or which negatively or adversely affects the reputation of the University or UAF’s athletics programs in any way.”

Other disciplinary action, according to the contract Petrino signed March 9, 2011, could include, but is not limited to: suspension for a period of time without pay; reduction in salary and incentive compensation; loss or reduction of the amount of any special allowances for unusual expenses, or other disciplinary or corrective action which may be authorized by the provisions of the NCAA enforcement procedures.”

Petrino is paid $3.56 million annually and given $35,000 by the UA for “obtaining and/or continuing any existing life insurance and long-term disability insurance policies to secure the total value of your compensation package” as head coach. will continue to follow this story.
