Andrew Luck

It was no surprise that most news stories about Indianapolis' first pick of Andrew Luck in the NFL Draft would include the phrase "it was no surprise". It was a forgone conclusion before even Peyton Manning left the team that Luck would likely be wearing a horseshoe on his helmet.

There was a surprise in seeing what the Stanford quarterback uses as a cellphone: A Samsung fliphone.

This is Stanford we're talking about here, the home school for most of Palo Alto's technological industries. Show up at an Applebee's in Silicon Valley with one of those things and they might not give you silverware to eat your food with.

While most folks carry around a cell phone (sorry, mobile device) that more closely resembles a deck of cards than a banana, there is a certain nostalgia Luck's phone reminds us of, the ability to smack shut the receiver at the end of a call with a satisfying slap. Pushing that little button now just doesn't do the justice.

Good thing Luck wasn't too busy playing "Snake" when he got the call. And in his preferred text language, it's our privaledge to say to Luck, "Welcome to the 66,333,555."
