Running back Michael Dyer is unlikely to play for Arkansas State in 2012.

That news comes courtesy of a Monday interview with Red Wolves Coach Gus Malzahn on the Smash Mouth Radio Network, 97.3 The Zone in Birmingham. Malzahn told the hosts, including Birmingham News columnist Kevin Scarbinksy, that the Auburn transfer was unlikely to play this season, but would play for the Red Wolves in 2013.

“As of right now he’ll have to sit out a year," Malzahn said. "And that’s what it will probably end up.”

ArkansasSports360.com is awaiting official word from Arkansas State and/or Malzahn, Auburn's offensive coordinator before leaving to take the ASU job this year. Audio of the interview is available here, courtesy the Smash Mouth Radio Network.

Malzahn told me late in April that he had no timetable for a decision on Dyer.

Dyer ran for 85 yards on 15 carries during the ASU spring game last month. He also caught a pair of passes, including one for an 18-yard touchdown.

Auburn Coach Gene Chizik suspended Dyer at the end of 2011. He transferred to ASU after Malzahn was hired.

ASU was considering applying for a transfer waiver for Dyer, who is a Little Rock native. Dyer would be eligible for the 2013 NFL Draft, but Malzahn said he expected the former All-SEC performer to return to ASU.

“When he gets on the field he’s dynamic," Malzahn said. "We think he’s one of the best running backs in college football.”
