Arkansas forward Devonta Abron has been granted a scholarship release from Arkansas.

Abron, who averaged 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 32 games last season, is reportedly working to get closer to home. Abron, a 6-foot-8, 255-pound freshman, started 22 games for the Razorbacks.

CBS writer Jeff Goodman said Abron will work to get an “NCAA waiver to play next season due to health issue in his family.” Abron is from Texas.

Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson was not immediately available for comment, but the school confirmed that Abron has been given a release.

Abron's departure would hurt an already thin frontcourt. He is the second player to leave the program following the season, including point guard Julysses Nobles.

Other transfers since Anderson took over last spring include guards Jeff Peterson and Rotnei Clarke and forward Glenn Bryant.

Arkansas also announced on Tuesday the signing of transfer Alandise Harris, a forward from Little Rock who played the past two seasons at Houston. Harris, according to a UA release, will likely have to sit out the 2012-13 season to satisfy NCAA Transfer rules Harris and the UA will work to appeal for immediately eligibilty.

Harris, 6-6, 220 pounds, averaged 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in two seasons at Houston, starting 29 of 30 games and averaging  29.8 minutes a game.
