Jury selection is underway for the trial of Harvey Updyke, the Alabama Crimson Tide fan who stands accused of poisoning the oak trees at Toomer's Corner on the Auburn campus. Nearly half of the potential jurors say they have rolled the corners in happy celebration before while others have outright come out and said, yeah, they think Updyke did it.
There is a lot of emotion in the courthouse, and you wouldn't be faulted for thinking that maybe the trial should be moved to a location more than five minutes away from Auburn. However, before that happens, maybe you should hear from another key player in the trial, another man who thinks the defendant is guilty.
Updyke himself.
Shortly after pleading innocent to the judge on the charges facing him, Updyke opened himself up to a reporter who openly identified himself as an employee of The Plainsman newspaper.
“Did I do it? Yes,” Updyke said outside of an elevator on the second floor of the Lee County Justice Center in Opelika.
It should be an interesting trial then. At least Updyke is no
