Mitch Mustain’s professional baseball debut is in the books.

Mustain pitched two innings in relief for the Bristol (Va.) White Sox in the Rookie Appalachian League. He gave up two hits and struck out two and has a 0.00 earned run average.

It was a solid outing, especially considering he hasn’t pitched since his sophomore season of high school. Mustain (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) chose to pursue football out of Springdale High, a decision that led him to Arkansas and USC.

Certainly, Mustain faces a long, improbable road to the major leagues. But he and the White Sox have to be encouraged by his first trip to the mound.
