Paetec Merger Complete, Windstream Cuts 280 Jobs, None in Arkansas

Windstream Corp. of Little Rock said Thursday that it will eliminate 280 positions as it restructures operations after completing a $2.3 billion acquisition of Paetec Holding Corp. of Fairport, N.Y.

A Windstream spokesman said the move does not affect jobs in Arkansas. The 280 positions include 52 positions in Rochester, N.Y., over the next 120 days.

The Rochester positions primarily are in accounting, human resources and marketing, according to Windstream, which has about 950 employees in Rochester and about 14,500 company-wide following the merger.

"This reorganization follows a detailed review of overall functions at Paetec as part of our integration planning to identify redundancies in corporate staff positions and leverage existing workgroups within Windstream," Joe Marano, senior vice president of business and financial services, said in a news release.

"We remain committed to maintaining a large presence long term in Rochester, including a new office location in Midtown."

The merger was announced in August and continued despite the questionable future of a Paetec building project called Midtown Tower in downtown Rochester. Windstream later announced it would continue the project.

Windstream said that employees affected by the changes can apply for other open positions within the company. The company also said it will provide severance benefits to eligible employees along with outplacement services.
