Anniversary of Arkansas Gazette Closing To Be Memorialized

Stephen Steed, former state desk and freelance reporter for the Arkansas Gazette, is organizing a party to reunite erstwhile Gazette staffers and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the historic newspaper's closing.

The event is 4-7 p.m. Saturday at the bar of the Legacy Hotel, 625 W. Capitol Ave., Little Rock. Appetizers will be served and there will be a cash bar available. Potluck contributions are welcome at the informal affair. Gazette memorabilia will be on display.

The event is open to the public "because the public responded generously with offers of cash and words of comfort in the Gazette's waning days," Steed said.

The Gazette closed Oct. 18, 1991, when Wehco Media Inc. purchased its assets. Wehco Media owns the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, which was formerly titled the Arkansas Democrat. The Democrat competed fiercely against the Gazette for 13 years prior to the latter's closure. Gannett Co. of McLean, Va. owned the Gazette from 1986-1991.

When the Gazette closed permanently, 500 full-time and about 1,200 part-time employees lost their jobs.
