Cabela's Inc. of Sidney, Neb., said Thursday that it plans to open a 100,000-SF store in Rogers in summer 2012.

The publicly traded outdoor supplies retailer said the store will be located adjacent to the Pinnacle Hills Promenade mall at the Perry Road interchange with Interstate 540. The Rogers Planning and Transportation Department said the store would sit in a lot near Target near the south end of the Promenade.

Cabela's and other local officials held a news conference annoucing the store Thursday morning, attended by Gov. Mike Beebe. The Rogers location will be Cabela's first retail store in Arkansas.

"It's always exciting to bring Cabela's unique retail experience to another state," Cabela's CEO Tommy Millner said. "Many people in Arkansas have been longtime Cabela's catalog and Internet customers, so it's our honor to serve them in our retail stores too. We look forward to sharing our passion for the outdoors with the hunters, anglers and campers of the Natural State."

The store will rest on land owned in a partnership between Rogers Retail LLC and General Growth Properties of Chicago, according to John George, executive vice president of Hunt Ventures. Rogers Retail is a partnership of Johnelle Hunt and Tim Graham, who are chairman and president, respectively, of Hunt Ventures.

"It's a big deal. Cabela's is going to draw from 100 miles in every direction, at least," George said. "That's encouraging for all the other retailers in Pinnacle Promenade area."

George said the new Cabela's could further entice other retailers who have been "sitting on the sidelines thinking about moving into the area, but waiting to see what happened."

Cabela's stores offer thousands of outdoor products, including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and wildlife-watching gear. It also sells outdoor clothing and outdoor-themed gifts and furnishings.

A Cabela's news release said the building's exterior will have log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. The storefront will be glass. Inside the store, Cabela's plans "conservation-themed wildlife displays and trophy animal mounts" and an aquarium. The store will also feature a gun library, "bargain cave" and a cafe.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2012.

The retail chain its marking its 50th anniversary this year. In 2011, it has opened stores in Allen, Texas and Springfield, Ore. In August, it will open a store in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The Rogers store is one of four Cabela's will open in 2012. Other new store locations are in Wichita, Kan., Tulalip, Wash., and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Publicly traded General Growth Properties has been in the shopping center business for 50 years and has about 200 million-SF of retail space in its portfolio.
