Tower Building on Agenda

The State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program will consider 14 Arkansas properties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places at its meeting at 10 a.m. Aug. 3. The meeting will be in room 170 of the Tower Building at 323 Center St. in Little Rock.

Properties to be considered for National Register nomination are:

  • The Tower Building;
  • Ouachita Avenue Historic District and Central Methodist Episcopal Church South in Hot Springs;
  • Roanoke Baptist Church near Gurdon (Clark County);
  • Okolona Colored High School Gymnasium in Okolona (Clark County);
  • Clifton & Greening Streets Historic District Boundary Increase in Camden;
  • Monticello Commercial Historic District;
  • Hamburg Cemetery Historic Section in Hamburg (Ashley County);
  • Huntsville-St. Paul Road Stone Culvert near Witter (Madison County);
  • Mahony Historic District in El Dorado;
  • Camp Chaffee Tank Destroyer Battalion Barracks Historic District in Barling;
  • Springdale Poultry Industry Historic District and Price Produce & Service Station in Springdale; and
  • Camp Crowder Gymnasium in Sulphur Springs (Benton County).

The board also will consider the Trestle No. 78-7 near Eureka Springs for listing on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places.

Contests Note Soybean Farmers

The Arkansas Soybean Association is again holding its Race for 100 Bushels per Acre Soybean Yield Contest and is introducing the Go for the Green Soybean Yield Challenge. The contests are open to all soybean producers in Arkansas and the entry deadline is Aug. 1.

The Race for 100 recognizes the first producer or producers to achieve the 100-bushel mark with a $50,000 cash prize. If more than one producer hits the 100-bushel mark, the prize will be divided between the producers.

The Go for the Green Challenge honors the top producers in the following divisions: early season soybeans, full-season soybeans and double crop. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top four producers in each category with prizes beginning at $1,500 and top prizes of up to $10,000.

Home-Based Business Chat Set

The U.S. Small Business Admini-stration will hold a Web-based discussion July 28 from noon to 1 p.m. Central time on starting a home-based business. Boyd Wright, a promoter of home-based businesses and a small-business owner himself, will host the discussion, "Growing a Home-Based Business: What You Need to Know." Web chat participants can post questions online in advance and can join the live Web discussion by visiting SBA.gov and clicking on the Web chat event under "What’s New."

Thorpe Products Buys IDS

Thorpe Products Co. of Houston, Texas, has completed the purchase of Integrated Distribution Services Inc., a distributor of industrial, commercial and mechanical insulation with branches in Little Rock, St. Louis and Memphis. Thorpe Products makes and sells industrial insulation and related products. The addition of the three IDS locations brings Thorpe’s total branch locations to 10.
