Counterintuitive (Editorial)

We've been hearing so much about the job-killing nature of federal laws and regulations that we did a double take when reading one of the reasons ABB was interested in acquiring Baldor Electric Co. of Fort Smith:

"The U.S. market for high-efficiency motors is expected to grow 10 to 15 percent in 2011 on the back of new regulations, effective in December this year," the Swiss company said in a news release. "Similar regulations in Canada, Mexico and in the European Union are expected in 2011."

Government intervention in free markets is not something to be taken lightly, and change is rarely welcomed by organizations whose businesses have benefited from the status quo. But it's important to remember that the market finds ways to exploit change - in this case, the Energy Independence & Security Act of 2007. These are the kind of "green jobs" that we were promised.
