BiologicsMD has been awarded a $2.3 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.

BiologicsMD, a University of Arkansas startup, has developed a treatment for osteoporosis that binds to the bone and spurs new bone growth, reversing the effects of the disease. The grant will be administered through U.S. Army Research for the Veterans Administration.

The VA is the largest health-care provider in the country, and osteoporosis is one of its long-term health concerns. BiologicsMD applied for the grant in April 2010, and only 57 of 607 grant applicants were approved for funding.

BiologicsMD is an Innovate Arkansas client company. Arkansas Business will update this story.
