Howard Slinkard Is New ASU System Board Chair

Howard Slinkard of Rogers has been elected chair of the Board of Trustees for the Arkansas State University system.

Slinkard, an attorney, served as a board member at ASU before his election to board chair.

"It is an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to serve Arkansas State University in this capacity," Slinkard said. "I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Board, staff, faculty and administration in the university system, and our new system president, Dr. Chuck Welch, to address the challenges and opportunities that lie before us as a public institution."

Ron Rhodes of Cherokee Village was elected vice chair and Mike Gibson of Osceola was elected board secretary.

Other members of the board are Dan Pierce of Jonesboro and Florine Tousant Milligan of Forrest City, who completed her second term as board chair Friday.

Slinkard is a native of Trumann, where he was a 1965 graduate of Trumann High School. He holds a bachelor of arts from Arkansas State University and a juris doctor from the University of Arkansas. His term expires in January 2012.

The board has oversight responsibilities for the ASU system of campuses at Jonesboro, Beebe, Mountain Home, Newport, Heber Springs, Searcy and Marked Tree.
