Stephens Media is reporting that Sherman Frederick, publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and CEO of Stephens Media LLC, stepped down from both positions Friday. The newspaper's editor, Thomas Mitchell, also is leaving. He'll become senior opinion editor for the newspaper.

Bob Brown, who has worked as the advertising director of the newspaper since 2001, will replace Frederick as publisher effective immediately.

Michael Ferguson, the current chief operating officer of Stephens Media, will take Frederick's place as CEO. "It surprised me," Ferguson said of his new role. "I did not know that Sherman was going to be taking other responsibilities."

Frederick, who underwent several surgeries over the summer, will remain with the company as a consultant, and will write a weekly column for the company's newspapers.
